EI 120 Fire Rolling Shutter and Smoke Curtains for CityWave in Milan
Blackfire contributed to the CityWave project, the new development in Milan’s CityLife district, by supplying solutions for fire compartmentation and smoke control across different areas of the building.
Designed by Danish architecture firm BIG – Bjarke Ingels Group, CityWave consists of two buildings connected by the distinctive wave-shaped canopy that gives the project its name. The development will accommodate offices, retail, hospitality and restaurant spaces.
For the project, one EI 120 fire rolling shutter and two smoke curtains were installed and integrated into areas with different architectural and functional requirements.
Blackfire solutions installed at CityWave
The project involved three passive fire protection and smoke control systems:
EI 120 Fire Rolling Shutter
Dimensions: 6,050 × 2,750 mm
Colour: RAL 7047
Location: Underground garage
Smoke Curtain
Dimensions: 8,000 × 3,550 mm
Location: Underground garage
Smoke Curtain
Dimensions: 2,240 × 3,090 mm
Location: Office area, first floor

The solutions were installed to meet the fire compartmentation and smoke control requirements of different areas of the building, while integrating effectively with its architectural and building services design.
An EI 120 fire rolling shutter weighing almost 2 tonnes
The most challenging phase of the project involved the installation of the EI 120 fire rolling shutter in the underground garage.
The shutter was installed inside a tunnel between two ramps, where limited headroom and particularly restricted manoeuvring space made the installation especially demanding.
Handling operations were further complicated by the weight of the shutter curtain, which was close to 2 tonnes.
The installation therefore required careful planning, dedicated lifting equipment and precise on-site coordination.
Blackfire technical support on site
In a project of this complexity, the successful integration of a fire-resistant closure depends not only on the performance of the product itself, but also on the effective management of the different installation phases.
The Blackfire team provided on-site technical support to M.R.I., the company responsible for the installation, assisting with the operations required to ensure the correct integration of the systems into the building.
Careful planning, specialised lifting equipment and close on-site coordination enabled the installation of the specified solutions to be successfully completed.
Passive fire protection for complex projects
The CityWave project is a concrete example of how Blackfire solutions can be applied to buildings characterised by a high level of architectural and technical complexity.
Certified solutions, technical expertise and on-site support, from design through to system integration within the building.
